Global Medallion Program
Florida International University provides students with the chance to participate in the Global Medallion Program. This program provides an opportunity for scholars to become globally aware and to earn a distinct honor. This is a program that I decided to take part in and it has left an important mark on my overall university experience and will resonate with me in my future endeavors.
Ciao, coucou, hola, oi, hello! My name is Sarah and I am a senior at Florida International University! I am about to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in April 2019 and my major is International Relations and my minor is French. I have always had an interest in culture, languages, history, and helping others. I speak Italian, French, and some Spanish and I want to continue learning other languages. I believe that International Relations is an umbrella that contains all those other fascinating subjects underneath. I am of Italian, Tunisian, and French origin but I was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. I moved down to Miami in 2015 and have been exploring the city ever since! I hope to pursue a Masters degree in France and I am considering a career route towards either teaching or Foreign Service. I would love to encourage others to learn about the world around them and ultimately help strengthen relations between either individuals or nations!
The Global Medallion Program encourages students to gain an understanding of other perspectives. All of my experiences at FIU have allowed me to exercise this ability to put myself in someone else's shoes, and being from another state, I had to initially learn about Miami culture and the point of view of people from this city. Then I learned about the French perspective and each person I meet has their own unique approach of looking at life and interpreting surroundings. My classes taught me about the various kinds of societies from both the past and present and I have always had an appreciation for culture because I believe everyone is capable of teaching something new and true progress comes from being able to empathize and shift perspectives to find solutions.
I was lucky enough to have been raised in a very diverse community. Growing up, I had friends from Nigeria, India, El Salvador, Vietnam, Ghana, and Ethiopia. I was exposed to many cultures at a young age and for that, I am very lucky. It would help set the stage for what I want to pursue as a career. Since I have always found interest in studying cultures and learning about other peoples, I chose International Relations. The information and skills I learned from this discipline include but are not limited to, strategic planning, group dynamics, and of course, global awareness. One event somewhere in the world will inevitably cause a ripple effect and its repercussions will be felt throughout the global community. This is why it's necessary for students, such as myself, to see the big picture. I learned about the connections past events have with today's current affairs and the Global Medallion stresses this need for global engagement. I feel that I will continue becoming more globally aware as I meet people from other countries and follow this internationally oriented career path.
I am so grateful that I decided to participate in the Global Medallion program because it encourages students to be better, well-rounded, and globally engaged people. The classes I took, the clubs joined, and the study abroad I did are just the start of my global engagement. I plan to use my International Relations major to join an international organization that will help mend relations between nations or help build better policies. I would like to help those that seek to leave a precarious environment and migrate somewhere they have more opportunity. I want to keep striving to learn about others, to travel and take on as many languages I can to better understand other societies and in turn, making it easier to adapt to living in a new place. My goal is to live in a nation where English is not the spoken language and I want to help communities either through education or through Foreign Service. These goals will be easier to achieve, I believe, once I get my Masters abroad. I think that the Global Medallion program reminds its students the importance of being globally engaged as our community goes beyond borders as the world becomes increasingly globalized.
